<p>It is important for execs at all levels to understand the difference between the two –</p>
<p>Strategy is goal centric.  When developing a strategy for a client, I might ask …</p>
<p>“How can we help you, use social media to…”</p>
<p>•   Aid in your branding and awareness campaigns<br />
•   Create direct sales or marketing opportunities<br />
•   Help the organization achieve its mission statement<br />
•   Provide greater customer service<br />
•   Facilitate a culture for research, development &amp; collaboration<br />
•   Establish community development opportunities</p>
<p>However, your social media <em>policy</em> is much more operation centric.  To help you better understand the difference, I recently came across an interview with <a href="http://www.alexandralevit.com/" target="_blank">Alexandra Levit</a>.  She is a career columnist for the Wall Street Journal and author of five books including “<a href="http://www.newjobnewyou.com/" target="_blank">New Job, New You</a>.” Levit recently shared her take on <a href="http://smartblogs.com/socialmedia/2010/07/14/creating-a-social-media-policy-that-works-with-alexandra-levit/" target="_blank">social-media use in the workplace with SmartBrief’s</a><a title="Posts by Jesse Stanchak" href="http://smartblogs.com/socialmedia/author/jstanchak/">, Jesse Stanchak</a><a href="http://smartblogs.com/socialmedia/2010/07/14/creating-a-social-media-policy-that-works-with-alexandra-levit/" target="_blank">.</a></p>
<p>In it, she talks about 5 key steps to consider when developing your social-media policy that includes the following points:</p>
<p>•   Define what you mean by social media — for most, social media means an online forum for two-way communication.<br />
•   Clarify who will own work products created on social-media sites.<br />
•   Spell out the type of information considered proprietary or confidential  — customer details, company financial data, etc. — and say that it should never be shared on these sites.<br />
•   Spell out the type of potentially damaging information that should never be shared on these sites: offensive comments, libelous statements, illegal activity, etc.<br />
•   Determine which employees should be contributing to social-media sites on behalf of the company and what activities these individuals should be engaged in.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Democratic leadership style is also called the Participant style as it encourages employees to be a part of the decision making. Democratic leaders encourage group members to participate in the decision making process, allowing them to voice their views and opinions. This form of leadership draws its strength from the team members themselves.  This approach is particularly useful when the course of action is unclear and the leader needs to tap the collective wisdom of the group.</p>
<p>Since no leader can be an expert in all areas, at all times, the Democratic leaders will gather input from group members. Their specialized knowledge and expertise creates a more complete picture for making quality decisions. Group members tend to feel more engaged in the process and therefore, more motivated and creative.</p>
<p>The democratic leader is the communicator and keeps everyone informed about the things that affect their work and their environment. They share decision making and problem solving responsibilities by gathering input from team members and attempting to build a team consensus, but in the end, they will retain the final say over the decision-making process.</p>
